Syra Madad, D.H.Sc., M.Sc., MCP, is an internationally acclaimed leader in public health and special pathogen preparedness and response. She serves as the Chief Biopreparedness Officer at New York City Health + Hospitals, the largest municipal healthcare delivery system in the United States. Beyond her role at NYC Health + Hospitals, Dr. Madad is a Core Faculty member at the National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center, an affiliate faculty at the Center for Emerging Infectious Disease Policy & Research at Boston University, and a Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. She also advises the World Health Organization’s Technical Advisory Group on the Responsible Use of the Life Sciences and Dual-Use Research, and is a member of the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity.
Dr. Madad has significantly advanced the field of science through her extensive publications, including papers, book chapters, and journal articles. She has presented her research at over 70 conferences worldwide. On December 27th 2019, Dr. Madad published an op-ed in the Washington Post, co-written with Ronald A. Klain, former United States Ebola response coordinator for President Obama. The piece warned lawmakers that this vital program was set to expire in May of 2020, urging Congress to renew funding for the system that helps keep Americans safe from a sudden epidemic. “Failure to act would be penny-wise but pound-foolish,” it read. “The day will come when a dangerous pathogen will arrive in the United States once again.” On December 31st, four days after the article was published, the government in Wuhan, China, reported to the World Health Organization that it was treating dozens of patients for a novel virus of unknown origin.
