Whether you know it or not, you’ve seen Joe Sohm’s imagery as he is the most published Americana photographer in the world. While published more than 1 million times in the worldwide media, there is so much more to Sohm’s work than his stunning imagery and 4K music videos made from his 40-year search for America across the 50 states.
Joe was born near the Mississippi River, just off Route 66, in St. Louis — the heart of America. His “Visions of America” keynote is a multi-media presentation that blends his passions for American history, music, and imagery. With narration by Clint Eastwood and William Shatner, original songs by Oscar-Emmy-Grammy winning Alan and Marilyn Bergman, vocals by Patti Austin and Sheléa (of Quincy Jones’s “Q” Records), and music by Roger Kellaway, an Oscar-nominated and Grammy winning artist known for “Star is Born,” Sohm’s presentations are rich with music, anecdotes, and breathtaking imagery from stills to timelapses to “flying cameras” with his 4K drone.
Concluding with his original anthem song, “WE THE PEOPLE,” Joe’s keynotes inspire hope and a deep appreciation for the best of America. His keynote talks have been transformed into a series of photo-symphonies that have been performed to over 100,000 people by the Boston Pops, Philly Pops, New West Symphony, Provo Symphony, and the Kansas City Symphony. For America’s 250th Anniversary in 2026, Sohm is collaborating with Grammy-nominated composer Peter Boyer on a production set to premiere at the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington D.C., performed by the National Symphony Orchestra. “American Mosaic” will then go on across America as part of the 250th Anniversary of America and perform with major symphony orchestras.
Joe Sohm’s “Visions of America” is 40-years in the making. Spanning the 50 states, Joe has crisscrossed repeatedly in search of the imagery that addresses a single question — “how do you photograph democracy?” After all, democracy is an idea, which beckons a larger question, “how do you photograph an idea?”
Over decades Joe has concluded that it is impossible to capture democracy in a single image. In fact, the only way to capture democracy in America is by collecting tens of thousands of images — the people, cities, small towns, the games, Presidents, even the challenges and like puzzle pieces, a portrait of democracy is revealed. Like a George Seurat pointillist painting, democracy is a collection of “dots” revealing a singular picture of American civilization. We are all one of those dots and part of this American picture.
