This philosophy was put to the ultimate test on the early evening of November 19, 2010, when Young began what seemed like a routine patrol.
What happened next defied explanation. Young was ambushed and shot nine times while patrolling the remote canyons outside his hometown of Moab, Utah. Bleeding out in the backcountry, he faced a critical choice: he could let go, give up, and proceed to the next realm, or he could get up and fight back.
To the gunman’s consternation, Young somehow rose to his feet, despite the hollow-point slugs and shrapnel throughout his body. He returned fire, and the fight was on.
Through his experience, Young shares powerful lessons about the value of family and friendships, the power of forgiveness, the importance of training, and trusting one’s gut. Above all, he emphasizes the importance of fighting back.
Young’s story of survival and grit is now taught at federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLTC) and the Utah Police Academy. He sees himself as a testament to the words of the late Greek soldier Archilochus, who said, “We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.”
Young fought back to wear the uniform again. His experience brings perspective, hope, and a reminder that when it seems like the sky is falling, one should just relax — it’s only the roof caving in. Through his story, which he calls “Nine Miracles,” Young aims to motivate and inspire others to rethink the way they handle adversity.
