In the first 27 years of Austin Hatch’s life, he survived two separate plane crashes, which left him with the tremendous loss of his immediate family, as well as a severe list of injuries that nearly took his life. When he came out of a 2-month long coma after the second plane crash, he had to relearn basic life skills such as walking and talking. He made the decision that he was going to find a way to fulfill his dream of playing basketball at the University of Michigan — which he did. A lot of things had to happen to overcome the challenges and make it to Michigan, but more than anything, it took grit. Instead of choosing to dwell on his circumstances, Austin made the decision to share his life experiences with others, providing a variety of organizations with a message of overcoming adversity, grit, and hope. He is now is a full-time motivational speaker, and lives with his wife Abby, and their son in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
There are four key components to grit, but Austin believes grit is driven by having a greater purpose for why we do what we do. If we are working just for ourselves, it is very likely that we will eventually face some form of adversity that will cause us to give up because we don’t have a driving force for why we do what we do. If we are working for something bigger than ourselves. He believes we will always do what it takes to get the job done, no matter the task and no matter the circumstances. As an acronym, he defines G.R.I.T. as growth, resilience, integrity, and a team first mindset.
