Human connection and digital wellness expert, Mark Ostach blends personal storytelling and research to demonstrate the importance of human connection and it’s impact on organizational health. Mark’s insights offer today’s leaders strategies to combat disconnection and restore mental energy within their teams by modeling vulnerability and courage.
In today’s fast-paced, digital-first world, communication is constant—but meaningful connection often feels out of reach. While emails and virtual meetings keep us informed, they rarely leave us feeling truly seen. Yet, it’s that sense of being known that fosters trust, boosts morale, and drives team success.
One of the most transformative prompts I’ve used to foster deeper connections is: “If you really knew me, you’d know…” This question goes beyond the usual pleasantries, inviting team members to share something personal—whether it’s a challenge they’re facing, a recent victory, or a hidden passion. In a recent workshop, this question led to unexpected vulnerability. As participants opened up, one woman shared how balancing her role as a team leader with her duties as a caregiver was both her biggest challenge and source of strength. The room’s energy shifted instantly, moving from surface-level conversation to genuine understanding. At other events, I’ve heard participants share things like, “If you really knew me, you’d know…”
Some of the responses are serious while others can be lighthearted. Most importantly, this exercise aligns with what I call the BELL method, which stands for Belonging, Empathy, Listening, and Love. The BELL method is about creating a culture where people feel they belong, empathy is actively practiced, listening is intentional, and love—yes, love—becomes a driving force of connection. Here are three steps to bring more digital wellness and human connection to your teams, using the BELL method as a guide:
Begin meetings with the “If you really knew me…” prompt, setting a tone of openness and belonging.
Encourage moments of personal sharing and active listening, allowing team members to explore the BELL values in a supportive environment.
Use digital tools strategically, incorporating the BELL principles into team interactions, so that reflective dialogue becomes part of the culture.
In a world driven by digital communication, it’s these deeper questions and practices that create lasting bonds. When teams truly know each other and embrace the BELL method, they move beyond collaboration and into authentic community. And that’s when the magic happens—because we’re better together.
