During his time with the Green Bay Packers and in the NFL, Clay Matthews III embodied what it meant to be a pro football player in its purest form. The son of Clay Matthews Jr., an NFL legend who had impressive runs with the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons, Matthews III followed in the great athlete’s footsteps and superseded all expectations. The long-haired, explosive linebacker from University of Southern California had one of the best careers in Packers’ edge rusher history. The 26th overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, Matthews III played for the Packers franchise from 2009 to 2018, and, over that time, racked in a total of 519 total tackles, 91.5 sacks, and 17 forced fumbles. He helped bring home the Lombardy Trophy in 2010, became a staple on the Green Bay defense, and assisted one of the cornerstone franchises in the NFL with strong stability on the edge for a decade. Following an astounding career as the Packers’ all-time sack leader and a key member of their 2010 Super Bowl team, Clay Matthews officially retired in 2022. Widely regarded as one of the best pass rushers to ever play the game, Clay Matthews’ impact on the league and Packers’ history will never be forgotten.
