Kay Firth-Butterfield has been leading work on responsible design, development, and use of AI for years. In 2014 she became the world’s first Chief AI Ethics Officer and in 2017 she was the inaugural head of AI at the World Economic Forum. Today, Kay helps businesses and governments navigate the complex business and geopolitical issues raised by AI.

Kay is a British Barrister by training and former judge who focused on human rights law. She is the TIME 100 Impact Awardee 2024. She is the author of books on human rights, AI, and modern slavery. She developed an interest in how technology will impact humans around the world. For more than a decade, Kay’s research and focus has been on the responsible design, development, and use of AI. Kay helps businesses reap the benefits and mitigate the risks that AI brings to their enterprise.
Kay contributed to the world’s first ethical principles on AI in 2017. She sits on the Polaris Council for the Government Accountability Office (USA), the Advisory Board for UNESCO International Research Centre on AI, and Advisory Boards for international companies and non-profits ADI, EarthSpecies, and AI4All.
